Risks of a Hair Transplant

A man with a good hairline and eyeglasses looking in front of him.

Depending upon who performs the hair transplant consult and who actually performs the hair transplant surgery will determine the risks involved in hair transplants.  Hair Transplant surgery is an actual surgery.  There are only a small handful of medical universities that actually teach the science of hair loss, hair restoration, and hair transplant surgeries in a medical residency.  Most doctors only learn about hair transplant procedures in a weekend course after medical school and/or from on-site training on their patients; therefore, they do not understand all the potential risks and are trying to sell a product. Furthermore, most of these inexperienced doctors delegate most of the surgery to unlicensed technicians, which is illegal.

That is why it is of utmost importance to consult with the medical surgeon who will be performing the surgery and ask the surgeon if he is allowing technicians to perform the vital aspects of the surgery. If a consultation is unethically conducted by a sales consultant or technician (and not a doctor), the proper diagnosis will not be made, and the short-term & long-term risks of hair restoration surgery will not be properly discussed with the patient.  A sales consultant has one goal, and that is to sell a hair transplant.

Hair loss in men and women, in addition to their hair growth treatment, is unique to each individual.  Age, genetics, donor area, and location of the transplant are some of the variables.  An excellent hair transplant doctor will take the time to thoroughly evaluate the patient during the consultation, make a diagnosis of the cause of hair loss, discuss both the medical and surgical options to achieve the patient’s realistic goals, and make sure that their lifetime risk associated with a surgery is completely minimized.
