Can Human Stem Cells Cure Baldness?

A potential cure for baldness was presented at the International Society for Stem Conference (ISSCR) in Los Angeles on June 27, 2019. Scientists have successfully grown “unlimited” hair on mice using stem cells – and are now refining the process to be used on humans. Dr. Paul McAndrews is a Medical Advisor for Stemson Therapeutics, who is on the forefront of delivering cell therapies to combat hair loss.

Stemson is the first to use human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to treat hair loss by generating de novo hair follicles. Because these cells come from the patient’s own blood, they are more likely to be accepted by their immune system. One of the advantages of the iPSC-based solution is the capacity to generate an unlimited supply of folliculogenic cells and hair follicles.

The American Academy of Dermatology estimates 80 million Americans suffer from hair loss. “Unfortunately, many unscrupulous companies, people without medical licenses, or doctors not board-certified to specialize in hair transplants all play off the insecurities of these people, either wasting their money, time, and even worse, the precious hair that they do have” said Dr. Paul McAndrews, board-certified Dermatologist, Hair Restoration expert and Medical Advisor to Stemson Therapeutics.
