A patient originally came to see me after having several prior surgeries at other hair transplant clinics. His hairline looked very unnatural from a mile away. He had numerous linear scars in the recipient site, and his frontal hairline was (1) too low, (2) too symmetric, and (3) had too large grafts on the frontal hairline.
In 2022, I performed a corrective FUT surgery on this patient to repair the prior botched hair transplant surgeries. Starting with his donor site, I carefully removed 3 adjacent linear scars in order to create just one linear scar.
On the patient’s recipient site:
- Removed via punch excision (FUE), bigger grafts that were too low on the forehead and in the frontal-temporal triangle (not natural). These good genetic hair follicles were then dissected under the stereoscopic microscope into individual follicular units and placed farther back in the appropriate location (the frontal forelock).
-
- It solved the problem of the hairline being too low and unnaturally pluggy.
-
- The grafts from the donor site were dissected under the stereoscopic microscope into individual follicular units and placed in
-
- The frontal hairline, to make it much more irregular
- The frontal forelock, to increase density
- The mid-forelock, to increase density
This solved the problem of the hairline being too symmetric. The human eye goes to straight lines. A symmetric hairline is a red flag of a bad hair transplant — it catches the human eye as unnatural. Natural hairlines are actually quite irregular; therefore, an excellent hair transplant hairline should also be irregular.
In 2024, I performed another hair transplant on this patient to accentuate the irregularity of the frontal hairline and increase the density in the frontal forelock and mid-forelock.
Long ago, this patient tried to save money by having cheap hair transplants with 3 different doctors. But he eventually had to come back to me to correct these very unnatural hair transplants.
The moral of the story: Paying more to have a surgery done correctly at the start is actually much cheaper than having corrective surgeries to fix & repair the cheaper surgeries. Do it right the first time.
Here are the patient’s own words in his recent positive Google Review:
“After botched hair transplants by Bosley and another provider who is no longer in business, I was forced to wear hairpieces for 25 years to hide the scarring and the obviousness of the transplants.
22 years ago, I consulted with Dr. McAndrews, but opted for a procedure with New Hair Institute because NHI was a lot cheaper. The results were better than my previous transplants, but still disappointing. I figured “that’s as good as it gets with hair transplants” and just gave up and continued to wear hairpieces. Not choosing Dr. McAndrews then was a huge mistake.
A few years ago, reading nothing but positive reviews of Dr. McAndrews and seeing the widespread respect for him on hair loss forums, I returned to Dr. McAndrews for a transplant. After only one procedure, in which he added density and corrected much of the damage from my previous transplants, I was able to throw my hairpieces away. After two more procedures, my hair looks natural and surprisingly dense. Now I spend only 3 minutes styling my hair after getting out of the shower and can travel and go swimming, all without the hassles and potential embarrassment of a hairpiece.
The attached pic is me after 3 Dr. McAndrews procedures.
Thank you Dr. McAndrews, Millie (the RN), and Mach (the office manager)!“
